The Sorrento State Emergency Service Unit is comprised of volunteer members based on the Southern Mornington Peninsula.

Composed entirely by volunteer members, the unit is staffed and operated by dedicated  members who volunteer their time to aid the local community when they need us most.

The unit is structured so that it contains staff officers with various responsabilities and general members. Staff Officers are volunteer members that have gained experience and training in specific areas and are voted to unpaid officer positions by votes cast by the entire unit.

There are many reasons why people volunteer their time to become an SES  member, some of these reasons are:

1) Community Responsability - feeling the need to give back to the community that you live in and supports you in a meaningful way.

 2) Ongoing Training - The State Emergency Service provides proffesional and accredited training to all members.

3) Personal and Professional Development - By being a member of the SES you gain valuable experience in aspects such as , teamwork, communication, training, experience, team building, supervision, leadership and much more.

4) Emotional Sentiments - During Large events there is an outpouring of emotion and a need in the community to assist people less fortunate, during these "events" volunteer organisations can sometimes experience an influx of volunteers.

5) Personal Recommendation - Members are constantly recruiting their friends and relatives into the SES as they are aware of the benifits of being a member.

6) Sense of Appreciation - Some prospective members have been directly assisted or know someone that has recieved assistance from the SES and join,  in appreciation for the hard work and proffesional attitude volunteers bring to every "incident " they attend.
